For the first time on Monday, May 24th 2010, Google revealed how it shares the AdSense revenue with the publishers. Google shared the details for two of its AdSense products - ‘AdSense for content’ and ‘AdSense for search’. AdSense for content allows publishers to show ads along with web content and AdSense for search allows publishers to place a custom Google search box on their website. Google allows upto 6 units of ‘AdSense for content’ and 2 units of ‘AdSense for search’ on a single web page.
Publishers of most popular ‘AdSense for content’ earns 68% of revenue share what the advertiser pays to Google, while the ‘AdSense for search’ earns you 51% revenue share. Google offers other products also including AdSense for mobile applications, AdSense for feeds, and AdSense for games, but it has not disclosed the revenue share details for these products as of now.
Though the above share is same globally for most publishers, but the revenue shares can vary for major online publishers with whom Google negotiates individual contracts. As per Neal Mohan, Vice President of Product Management, “The revenue share has remained the same for content and increased for search since the launch of these products. And this is to help you improve the returns from your site while giving you more control and insight into AdSense.”
