What are Netbooks
Netbooks are the mini version of laptops. These are inexpensive, small and light-weight, thus easy to handle. The initial use of netbooks began in the late 2007 when Asus introduced the Asus Eee PC. However, by late 2008; netbooks became quite popular and now shares an equal market space with laptops. In the short period since their appearance, netbooks have grown in size and features, now converging with new smaller, lighter notebooks.
Basic Specifications of Netbooks
Netbooks are best suited for general computing and net surfing, basically meant to be connected with friends and loved-ones. You can also listen to songs, play videos and share your photos online. Most netbooks in the market today support Wi-Fi and can also be used on mobile telephone networks. Some also include Ethernet and/or modem ports, for broadband or dial-up Internet access respectively.
Netbooks are now available with good enough storage capacity of 160GB with up to 12” display size. Battery life of netbook is considered to be better than traditional laptops. Most netbooks also come up with a camera. Netbooks are now available with good enough storage capacity of 160GB with up to 12” display size. Netbooks are also available in many colorful designs to attract the user, but netbooks are basically meant for general or basic computing only. If you want to run heavy applications, then netbook is not a suitable choice for you. Though, netbooks are still in the phase of development, more and more improvements can be expected in the years to come to make this gadget more robust in terms of speed and security.
India is all set to manufacture Tablet PC, which will be a low cost computing-cum-access device. The expected price of the model is going to be around $35. The union minister for Human Resource Development, Mr. Kapil Sibal told that price may further get reduced to $20 and eventually to around $10.
He also states the primary aim is to provide these low cost devices to students and teachers of all colleges and universities, which will enable them to gain access to high-quality digital content. This concept is a combined effort of group of professors/experts at IISc, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay.
The development efforts are still on, and various refinements and enhancements are being tested to reduce the cost without affecting the quality of the device. The device is expected to be made available to students in 2011. It is a single unit system with a touch screen and a built in keyboard along with 2GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power supply areas.
The minimum functionalities expected are:
• Internet browsing
• Wireless communication
• Multimedia content viewer
• Unzip tool for unzipping zip files
If India will successfully ship this computing device at the price mentioned, it will be really tough for Apple and other tablet PC makers to compete in India, which could be world’s cheapest laptop.

Recently, scientists have unveiled an ultra-fast chip to make your computer run faster. A team in the University of Glasgow has developed a CPU with 1,000 cores on a single microchip while the modern computers have a processor with at most 16 cores to process different tasks. In testing, it was found that the chip was able to process around five gigabytes of data per second, which will make desktop computers run almost 20 times faster than the current ones.
These days, desktop market is shrinking with the advent of various high-end computing devices which are much compact than traditional desktop computers. To make the desktops run faster, scientists have used FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip, which contains millions of transistors. According to Dr Wim Vanderbauwhedea, the team leader of this project, “FPGAs are not used within standard computers because they are fairly difficult to program but their processing power is huge while their energy consumption is very small”.
Though, this project is still in its nascent stage, but if carried out effectively, the real potential of FPGA chips will be utilized to provide very fast processing power in future computing and electronic devices.
