Nokia’s GEM Phone – A Customizable device

Nokia Gem is a full touch-screen smartphone that changes its appearance every time you use a different function. Nokia is working on its concept phone to turn the device into a morphing touch-screen display by making front, back, and sides of the phone an interactive display. The phone changes its appearance depending on the function you choose, be it a camera, map or any other function. This concept phone can also help advertisers as the back panel could easily be used for advertising while the user is making calls.

Google Image Search Redesigned

Google VP of Search Product and User Experience ‘Marissa Mayer’ told media that the site sees 1 billion page views every day and the number of Image searches are increasing day-by-day. Earlier, Google added ‘Find Similar Images’ feature which lets you search images that are visually similar to the one you selected. Another feature that is gaining popularity is ‘color search’. We have seen increase in search views but still it seems everyone is not utilizing all these features and may not be aware of these great features.

Now, Google redesigned ‘Google Images’ and claiming it to be the largest redesign since 2001. Results are now shown on the screen without text and links; it’s all images that you will see and you can get up to 1,000 images on a single page. Users will be able to see a larger thumbnail preview on the same page. This change is as per the user’s perspective and Google is loved most by Advertisers. To get more advertisers, Google has announced a new ad product that allows you to run your own image as an ad on Image Search. Obviously, users will now see sponsored images and advertisers will get new model for business and Google will receive more love from advertisers. If users will continue to get worth and related images in sponsored results, all will be well for Google.

Google revealed AdSense revenue share

For the first time on Monday, May 24th 2010, Google revealed how it shares the AdSense revenue with the publishers. Google shared the details for two of its AdSense products - ‘AdSense for content’ and ‘AdSense for search’. AdSense for content allows publishers to show ads along with web content and AdSense for search allows publishers to place a custom Google search box on their website. Google allows upto 6 units of ‘AdSense for content’ and 2 units of ‘AdSense for search’ on a single web page.

Publishers of most popular ‘AdSense for content’ earns 68% of revenue share what the advertiser pays to Google, while the ‘AdSense for search’ earns you 51% revenue share. Google offers other products also including AdSense for mobile applications, AdSense for feeds, and AdSense for games, but it has not disclosed the revenue share details for these products as of now.

Though the above share is same globally for most publishers, but the revenue shares can vary for major online publishers with whom Google negotiates individual contracts. As per Neal Mohan, Vice President of Product Management, “The revenue share has remained the same for content and increased for search since the launch of these products. And this is to help you improve the returns from your site while giving you more control and insight into AdSense.”

Latest Innovation – Advertisement on Number Plates

The California Legislature in the US is considering a bill that would allow the state to use digital license plates for vehicles. This digital plate will switch to advertisements when vehicle is stopped for more than four seconds while the number would remain visible at all times in some section of the screen. Though it is quite creative and innovative in nature but the move is intended as a moneymaker for a state facing $19 billion budget deficit.

The electronic plates would look like standard plates when the car is in motion, showing the registration number. But when a car will stop for more than four seconds, whether stuck in a jam or at a red light, advertisements would be displayed to people sitting in the vehicles behind. Though the basic purpose is to show ads and generate additional revenues but in emergencies, the plates could also be used to display public service announcements like missing children alerts, or traffic information.

The bill’s author, Democratic Senator Curren Price of Los Angeles, said “California would be the first state to implement such technology if the state Department of Motor Vehicles ultimately recommends the widespread use of the plates and other states are also exploring something similar”. A company named ‘Smart Plate’ in San Francisco is developing the plates and envisions them not just as a new outlet for advertisers, but also for drivers.
