India to give tough competition to Apple and tablet PC makers

India is all set to manufacture Tablet PC, which will be a low cost computing-cum-access device. The expected price of the model is going to be around $35. The union minister for Human Resource Development, Mr. Kapil Sibal told that price may further get reduced to $20 and eventually to around $10.

He also states the primary aim is to provide these low cost devices to students and teachers of all colleges and universities, which will enable them to gain access to high-quality digital content. This concept is a combined effort of group of professors/experts at IISc, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay.

The development efforts are still on, and various refinements and enhancements are being tested to reduce the cost without affecting the quality of the device. The device is expected to be made available to students in 2011. It is a single unit system with a touch screen and a built in keyboard along with 2GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power supply areas.

The minimum functionalities expected are:
• Internet browsing
• Wireless communication
• Multimedia content viewer
• Unzip tool for unzipping zip files

If India will successfully ship this computing device at the price mentioned, it will be really tough for Apple and other tablet PC makers to compete in India, which could be world’s cheapest laptop.

Toshiba’s dual-screen mini notebook PC – Libretto W100

Toshiba, the world’s fourth biggest notebook PC vendor, unveiled the Libretto W100, a dual-screened 7 inch mini notebook PC that can also be used as an e-book reader. This new gadget will add to competition for the likes of Apple Corp’s iPad and Amazon.com’s Kindle, which can be used like a conventional clam-style notebook PC with a software keyboard. The two multi-touch screens can work separately to surf the web on one and compose a mail on the other or together to act like a book or newspaper.

The Libretto runs Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium with 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 processor, 2GB of DDR3 (double-data rate) memory and a 62GB solid-state drive. It also incorporates 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1MP camera with face recognition and 1 USB port. This new touch-screen gadget is expected to go on sale in Japan in late August and later in Europe, the United States and other markets. World’s Lightest Smartphone – ‘Modu T’

Good news for smart phone lovers!!! If you always wanted to buy a sleek smartphone, now it is time for you to get the latest and world’s lightest smartphone. An Israel based company, ‘Modu’, has recently launched tiny smartphone ‘Modu T‘, weighing just 60 grams and measuring only 7.5 cms. Modu T is already listed in the ‘Guinness Book of World Record’ as the lightest touch mobile phone in the world.

Modu T is a 3.5 generation smartphone with a 2.2 inch touch screen and 2GB of memory, which is expandable up to 32 GB via microSD card. It will have a simple user interface, with preloaded content and applications. It is based on Qualcomm’s Brew operating system and equipped with an array of Java-based applications, including Facebook, Flickr Snaptu, media player TuneWiki, and Google search widget.

Modu comes with various “jackets” to enhance the handset’s capabilities. The “camerafy” jacket makes this phone equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, while the “textify” jacket gives it a full QWERTY keyboard feature. The price of this handset is expected to be in range of $250 US – $350 US.
