Recently, scientists have unveiled an ultra-fast chip to make your computer run faster. A team in the University of Glasgow has developed a CPU with 1,000 cores on a single microchip while the modern computers have a processor with at most 16 cores to process different tasks. In testing, it was found that the chip was able to process around five gigabytes of data per second, which will make desktop computers run almost 20 times faster than the current ones.
These days, desktop market is shrinking with the advent of various high-end computing devices which are much compact than traditional desktop computers. To make the desktops run faster, scientists have used FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip, which contains millions of transistors. According to Dr Wim Vanderbauwhedea, the team leader of this project, “FPGAs are not used within standard computers because they are fairly difficult to program but their processing power is huge while their energy consumption is very small”.
Though, this project is still in its nascent stage, but if carried out effectively, the real potential of FPGA chips will be utilized to provide very fast processing power in future computing and electronic devices.
