India is all set to manufacture Tablet PC, which will be a low cost computing-cum-access device. The expected price of the model is going to be around $35. The union minister for Human Resource Development, Mr. Kapil Sibal told that price may further get reduced to $20 and eventually to around $10.
He also states the primary aim is to provide these low cost devices to students and teachers of all colleges and universities, which will enable them to gain access to high-quality digital content. This concept is a combined effort of group of professors/experts at IISc, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay.
The development efforts are still on, and various refinements and enhancements are being tested to reduce the cost without affecting the quality of the device. The device is expected to be made available to students in 2011. It is a single unit system with a touch screen and a built in keyboard along with 2GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power supply areas.
The minimum functionalities expected are:
• Internet browsing
• Wireless communication
• Multimedia content viewer
• Unzip tool for unzipping zip files
If India will successfully ship this computing device at the price mentioned, it will be really tough for Apple and other tablet PC makers to compete in India, which could be world’s cheapest laptop.
