In the CES 2012, electronics majors Samsung and LG shows off the much awaited OLED TV. These TVs use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens which can make the screens extremely thin. It is the latest technology in the field of televisions which was in research since many years. The picture quality of OLED TV is simply awesome and can present highly saturated colors and a nearly perfect black.
It will be now interesting to see who will first launch this amazing TV. LG is believed to be launching it near the fourth quarter of this year while Samsung has still not revealed any tentative dates. But, as Samsung is already a global leader in the TV segment, it can be expected that Samsung will once again lead the market by launching it before anyone else. Though, it is also possible that LG might be playing a game by giving a tentative date and may launch it much before that to beat the Samsung’s plan. Well, that we will come to know in the days to come. So, for now let’s wait till the next big announcement comes.
SED – An upcoming Television Technology
2011 was certainly the year of ‘Gadgets’. Almost all electronic giants launched some of their best products and fascinate the world by the innovations. Below are some of the best gadgets that were launched in the year 2011:
- Samsung Galaxy S II – Galaxy S II, the phone which runs on Android 2.3 operating system is a combination of great looks and ultimate performance with 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen and dual-core 1.2 GHz processor.
- Apple iPad 2 – Apple launched its second generation iPad – the iPad 2 which is much faster than the previous one and includes front and back cameras.
- Nintendo 3DS – Nintendo launched the first gaming console that can provide the stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses.
- Sony PS Vita – Sony recently launched its latest PlayStation ‘Vita’, which has touch-interface with front and back cameras. It also has two knob-like joysticks and gamers can even connect over cell phone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots.
- Kindle Fire – The Kindle Fire is like an all-purpose computer than an e-reader which is the first full-color, touch-screen Kindle. You can watch movies, play games, surf web-pages and do whatever you like to do apart from reading your favorite books.
Though, all these gadgets were launched in 2011 but they will also remain popular in 2012.

Few months back, there was news in the technology world about the world’s cheapest tablet – ‘Aakash‘, which was made in India. It was supposed to be given to students in India at the subsidized price of Rs. 1200 ($25) though the Aakash tablet will cost the government around Rs 2,200 ($50). Now, the company ‘DataWind’ is soon launching the upgraded model of Aakash called the ‘Ubislate 7′ in only $60. It has upgraded processor of 700 Mhz with 3200 mAh battery and Android 2.3. Ubislate 7 will also have support for GPRS to be used as a phone. Definitely, there is no other touch pad tablet or computing device at this price, which certainly makes it attractive for the day-to-day requirements of most users.
Nokia Gem is a full touch-screen smartphone that changes its appearance every time you use a different function. Nokia is working on its concept phone to turn the device into a morphing touch-screen display by making front, back, and sides of the phone an interactive display. The phone changes its appearance depending on the function you choose, be it a camera, map or any other function. This concept phone can also help advertisers as the back panel could easily be used for advertising while the user is making calls.

Netflix is a service provider for on-demand internet streaming media in the United States, Canada and few other countries. So, whenever you want to watch your favorite movie, just logon to Netflix and enjoy the Netflix movie on your favorite screen like laptop or a projector. Netflix was established in 1997 in California and started its subscription-based digital distribution service in 1999, and by 2009, it had a collection of 100,000 titles of DVDs and offers a flat rate DVD-by-mail in the United States. Currently, Netflix has more than 20 million subscribers and planning to expand its services into the European and Latin America market.
Netflix is the biggest source of North American web traffic which accounts for more than 24 percent of aggregated traffic, as reported by Sandvine. It does not support playback on Linux PCs, but the Linux-based Roku devices and Android operating system which uses the Linux kernel are supported. Netflix offers its Internet video streaming (“Watch Instantly“) of selected titles to computers running Windows or Mac OS X and to compatible devices like Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 console; Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices, as well as Apple TV and Google TV.
HP TouchPad is a tablet computer designed and developed by one of the major information technology companies, ‘Hewlett-Packard’. HP launched this amazing gadget in July 2011 in some of the countries. Within two months, HP announced that no new hardware will be manufactured and the TouchPad tablet running webOS will be discontinued due to poor sales. After the announcement, the units of available models were sold within hours with substantial price reductions. In the USA, HP tablet was sold in $99 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 32GB model.
The HP TouchPad has the 9.7 inch, 1024×768 pixel, multi-touch capacitive touch screen with 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 processor and the device runs HP webOS. It also supports Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. With HP webOS, you can perform multiple tasks and seamlessly switch between multiple applications. On August 30, 2011, HP announced that they will make another production run of the TouchPad tablet. Now, just wait and see what will be the offered price of Touchpad tablet and will it get the better response than earlier.
Barnes and Noble’s ‘Nook e-Reader’ is a sleek and light weight e-Book reader with touch screen display, thus eliminating the need for many buttons which were presented in original nook. Nook e-Reader’s 6-inch display utilizes E Ink® Pearl technology, which is same as on the Amazon kindle 3G. With 7.5 ounces in weight, it is lighter than a paperback and still holds up to 1,000 books and newspapers with 2 GB internal memory and expandable up to 32 GB using microSD card. It also supports EPUB, PDF and Adobe DRM.
Nook also has an on-screen keyboard which appears whenever you need it. On the downside, Nook features only Wi-Fi connectivity while Kindle also offers 3G connectivity, but with a hefty price tag; you need to shell out some $50 more. With touch screen capabilities of Nook, it makes the navigation easier than Amazon’s kindle which has almost 40 buttons. So, if you do not like the touch screen, then you may opt for Kindle, otherwise Nook has a certain advantage over the current kindle.
So, which one you think will be more popular and win the battle – Amazon’s Kindle or ? Barnes and Noble’s Nook?
